Hospital Policy Update:

Heartworms are caused by mosquitos as mosquitos are prevalent in Florida. Heartworms are prevented by monthly prescription heartworm pills or injections that can last months. Heartworm prevention requires a prescription because the medications must be administered under a veterinarian's supervision to ensure proper dosage and safety based on the animal's weight and health, as well as to test for existing heartworm infections before starting prevention, which can cause severe reactions if an adult heartworm infestation is present. The FDA requires this oversight to protect pets from potential harm and ensure the medication is used effectively to treat or prevent a serious, potentially fatal disease.
